Heritage
Fuzhou lacquer is a national intangible cultural heritage. Its best-known form is built from cloth and raw lacquer over a mould, and then the mould is taken away. Read how it began, how it is made, and why it still needs people.
Traditional lacquer is the natural resin tapped from the lacquer tree, not a plastic coating. It is the oldest layer of the craft.
Traditional lacquer work builds a surface from many thin coats, each left to cure and then polished.
Colour and pattern come from layers, so each piece has its own depth and no two match exactly.
A polished lacquer surface shifts with the light and, with care, settles into a warm lustre over the years.
Details of how our own pieces are made are being confirmed with the workshop and will be published here once verified.
We list a material only once our workshop has confirmed it in writing.
Shipping, duties and delivery time are agreed with you before anything is sent.
Natural resin can still bother a few people, so we will not promise it is allergy-free. If you know you react to lacquer or plant resins, tell us before you reserve, and stop wearing a piece if your skin is irritated.
In development
We are considering a small range of zodiac pendants and mala-style bead strands. If that interests you, join the waiting list and tell us what you would like to see. Nothing is made until our workshop has confirmed materials and details.
Reserve a piece or ask a question. We reply by email to confirm the details. Nothing is charged now.
